COVID-19: Stop Choosing Sides

I’ve had enough.

I don’t usually get political on my blog, but I’ve had enough. I’ve had enough of the quarantine. We probably all have. It’s restricting. It’s an impingement on my freedom. I should be able to do what I want, when I want. This is all bullshit. I can’t even get haircut.

So what? To all of those who are crying in your beer about the government throwing their weight around: Deal with it. People are dying. And the quarantine is slowing that death rate down.

Oh, but then there’s the folks on the other side…

You can’t go out of your house without a mask. How dare you even consider traveling during this time? You’re endangering people every time you leave your yard.

To those folks, I say, mind your own damn business. If I want to take a drive, go to the park, or eat a cheeseburger from McDonald’s, that’s my choice. As long as I’m not sick and coughing in people’s faces, I think I’m using some common sense.

To the Naysayers:

Here’s the deal. COVID-19 is real. If you think it’s some kind of giant conspiracy, you’ve probably watched too many YouTube videos.

People are dying. If you don’t believe it, watch the news. If you don’t believe the news, go visit a hospital in New York City. Read the obituaries.

I have first-hand knowledge of the tragic loss of life from COVID-19 from medical professionals. The virus exists. You can take your conspiracy theories, and like the majority of conspiracy theories, toss them in the trash.

Otherwise, you’re showing not only your ignorance, but also your lack of consideration and common courtesy for others. You lack empathy, and your callousness never ceases to astonish me.

You’re essentially saying that you don’t give a rat’s ass about anyone’s grandparents, parents, brothers, or sisters getting sick and dying, because you believe this is all a hoax. And you’re screaming that while people are, in fact, dying.

And don’t give me this shit about how they were going to die anyway. Yes, we’re all going to die anyway. But some may die 5, 10, 20 years prematurely. So would it be okay if I took out your family with a machine gun tomorrow afternoon? I didn’t think so.

To the Overcautious:

Get over yourselves.

You’re not the COVID-19 patrol. Stop telling others how to live their lives. As well-intentioned as you think you are, I think we have enough outright fear being pushed down our throats by the media. We don’t need you adding to it. You’re fueling the fear fire.

Believe me, I share your concerns, but we can’t keep living in fear and hiding in our boxes forever. There has to be a happy medium.

Stop Choosing Sides

Our country has become so polarized that everything becomes political. But choosing sides in this situation is not helping anyone. It is possible to be a decent human being, even if you’re scared shitless, and even if you think this is all a governmental scheme to take over the world (which it probably isn’t).

So how can we find a happy medium? Have a little understanding and patience with others, no matter what you believe.

So you don’t like the quarantine? I get it. I’m tired of it, too. But most states are phasing everyday activities back into the mix. Just wait it out. You’ll survive. All the shouting won’t really change anything.

So you don’t want to wear a mask? Then don’t. But remember, your local government, businesses, and others have the right to ask you to wear one on their properties. If you don’t like that, it’s simple, don’t go to those places. Those restrictions will be lifted in the future.

My point is simple. We’re all in this together. No matter what you believe, the fallout from the coronavirus exists. And it will continue to exist for an unknown amount of time. Choosing sides and fighting over the situation at this point is moot. It won’t change either the virus, or the restrictions. Time, however, will.

Just use some common sense. Avoid major crowds. Wash your hands occasionally. Wear a mask if you want. Stay home if you’re sick. Is that so hard? Things will get back to something closer to normal. Just mind your own business and be patient in the meantime.

Both Sides Suck!

And how is this post political? Because through this whole COVID-19 situation, I’m continually reminded that we live in a two-party political system. One that leads to choosing sides. I for one have had enough.

I’ve often identified myself as a democrat. No more. I’m definitely not a republican either.

COVID-19 has shown me that now, more than ever, we need more political choices. Right now, libertarianism is looking pretty good to me. Just leave me alone and let me make my own choices. Unless those choices are truly endangering others, you’ve got no room to complain.

That’s all.
